By default, these files are excluded from the list. Synopsis Lists the directories in the source path to standard output.
Without options, ls displays files in a bare format. This bare format however makes it difficult to establish the type, permissions, and size of the files.
Note that ls and lsl recurse by default - use "--max-depth 1" to stop the recursion. Does not recurse by default. Regular files have no suffix.
The most common options to reveal this information or change the list of files are: -l long format, displaying Unix file typespermissions, of hard linksowner, lss, size, last-modified date and filename -f do not sort. The return status is the exit status of the last command executed.
When invoked without any arguments, ls lists the files in the current working directory. Listing a non existent directory will produce an error r for remotes which can't have empty directories eg s3, swift, gcs, etc - the bucket based remotes. If another directory is specified, then ls will list the files there, and in fact the user may specify any list of files and directories to be listed.
Useful for directories containing large s of files. Use the -R flag to recurse. Any of the filtering options can be applied to this command.
There are several related list commands ls to list size and path of objects only lsl to list modification time, size and path of objects only lsd to list directories only lsf to list objects and directories in easy to parse format lsjson to list objects and directories in JSON format ls,lsl, lsd are deed to be human readable. See the global flags for global options not listed here.
It's normally possible to highlight different types of files with different colors, instead of with characters as -F would, but this is an x where the two main ls versions differ: GNU ls uses the --color option; checks the Unix file type, the file permissions, and the file extension; and uses its own database to control colors. The return status is the exit status of list.

Sort entries alphabetically if none of -cftuvSUX nor --sort is specified. The other list commands lsd, lsf, lsjson do not recurse by default - use "-R" to make them recurse.
R asments and builtin commands that affect the shell's environment do not remain in effect after the command completes. Commands separated by a ; are executed sequentially; the shell waits for each command to terminate in turn.
Both are free software and open sourceand have only minor syntax differences.
